FAQs

We address some of the most commonly asked questions and doubts about the facts and treatments concerning fertility in men and women.

What is an IVF pregnancy?

IVF is also known as In Vitro Fertilization. It is the process where the extracted eggs and the sperm sample are combined in a petri dish under a highly controlled environment. The resulting embryo is then transplanted into the uterus. Krishna Hospitals is a reputed and reliable centre for IVF services. Apart from IVF, there are assisted reproductive options available like Gamete Intra Fallopian Transfer (GIFT) and Zygote Intra Fallopian Transfer(ZIFT).

What can one expect during the first visit for IVF treatment?

Couples start by meeting an IVF nurse to understand the process in detail and review a sample treatment cycle schedule. Next, you will meet your IVF specialist, who will recommend a comprehensive fertility analysis for you. Depending on the result, your doctor will decide about your treatment protocols.

Preliminary evaluations for women may include:

  • Complete medical history
  • Blood tests
  • Uterine ultrasound to measure the uterine cavity
  • Transvaginal ultrasound

The male partner may undergo tests like:

  • Sperm morphology evaluation
  • Seminal fluid analysis
  • Sperm cryopreservation, which is optional

How long should a couple try to conceive before they decide to consult a doctor?

There are two instances where we recommend a doctor's consultation:

  • If you are trying to conceive for more than a year and the woman is below the age of 35.
  • If you are trying to conceive for over six months, and the woman is above 35 years of age.

What happens during the initial stages of IVF treatment?

After preliminary tests are done, the woman is injected with hormones to produce multiple eggs every month, rather than a single one. Later, some tests are carried out to check if the eggs are ready for retrieval.

What is reproductive medicine?

It is a branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of conception problems, infertility, menopause, contraception, and sexual dysfunction.

What are the most common concerns women face when it comes to reproductive health?

Several health issues can adversely impact a woman's reproductive health, which is instrumental to her overall health. They are:

  • Female Sexual Dysfunction
  • Poly Cystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
  • Endometriosis
  • Primary Ovarian Insufficiency (POI)
  • Interstitial Cystitis (IC)
  • Uterine Fibroids
  • Gynaecological Cancer
  • Ovarian cancer
  • Cervical cancer
  • Uterine cancer
  • Vulvar cancer
  • Vaginal cancer

What are the procedures used to diagnose reproductive health issues?

Four important procedures are commonly followed to diagnose reproductive health problems in women.

  • Imaging tests - An ultrasound is used to diagnose uterine or fallopian tube diseases. A Sonohysterogram, or Saline Infusion Sonogram, is sometimes performed to examine the uterus in more detail.
  • Hydrasalpingography - This test determines how much the fallopian tubes have opened and evaluates the shape of the uterus. Furthermore, it is used to diagnose miscarriages caused by problems in the uterus. The process improves your chances of fertility by flushing out the abnormalities found in the fallopian tubes.
  • The ovulation test-This test determines the most fertile days of the month for women to maximise their chances of becoming pregnant. It detects an increase in Luteinizing Hormone (LH), which takes place a few days before ovulation.
  • Ovarian reserve testing - This test helps determine the quality and quantity of eggs available for ovulation.

What are the other uses of IVF treatment?

IVF is one of the most common treatment procedures used to artificially impregnate women with infertility issues. It is also used to rectify other infertility issues that arise due to:

  • Blocked and damaged fallopian tubes that are a result of pelvic inflammatory diseases or previous reproductive surgeries
  • Unexplained infertility
  • Endometriosis
  • Advanced age in women
  • Blockage and decreased sperm count

What are the commonly known reproductive issues men face?

In men, there are a few reproductive diseases that can negatively impact the function of their reproductive organs. Some of the most commonly occurring complications are:

  • Testicular cancer
  • Prostate cancer
  • Enlarged prostate or BPH
  • Undescended testicle
  • Testosterone deficiency
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Prostatitis
  • Varicocele or dilated veins around the testicle
  • Male infertility
  • Hydrocele or fluid around the testicle

Are there any side effects of IVF?

Yes, there are. Women undergoing IVF treatment may experience the following side effects:

  • Passing minimal quantities of fluid
  • Pain in the pelvic region
  • Heavy vaginal bleeding
  • Blood while urinating
  • High fever
  • Headaches
  • Mood swings
  • Stomach pain
  • Hot flashes
  • Bloating
