FAQs

Explore the details about Orthopaedics, the common bone problems, and the various treatment methods.

What is Orthopaedics?

Orthopaedics is a medical speciality that deals with the entire musculoskeletal system. This field of medicine encompasses the diagnosis and treatment of disorders related to the joints, bones, tendons, nerves, and ligaments in the body.

What is the role of an Orthopaedic doctor?

An Orthopaedic doctor specialises in treating ailments that concern your musculoskeletal system. They diagnose and treat issues that arise due to physical activities. They also help patients prevent and correct ortho-related issues and treat conditions like arthritis that can worsen with time.

What is Orthopaedic Surgery?

Orthopaedic surgery refers to the surgical treatment of musculoskeletal diseases and injuries. An orthopaedic surgeon treats a range of conditions that affect the muscles, bones, tendons, joints, ligaments, and nerves. They help people recover from mobility disorders and lead better lives.

What are the common orthopaedic injuries?

Amongst the many common injuries known to us, these four are the injuries for which people often consult doctors:
  • Sprains
  • Fractures
  • Sports injuries
  • Joint dislocations

Is it advisable to involve in sports activities with a replaced joint?

Yes, it is. However, you must inform your surgeon before you do so. They will recommend an appropriate prosthesis to give you better stability.

When should I consult an Orthopaedic specialist?

You must visit an orthopaedic specialist if you are experiencing mild to severe pain in your joints, bones, muscles, and ligaments. You must also look out for other symptoms such as:
  • Excruciating pain and swelling
  • Inability to perform daily activities due to stiffness, uneasiness, and pain
  • Slow or no improvement in the soft tissue injuries

What is internal fixation?

Internal fixation refers to the process of fixing or surgically mending broken bones with rods, screws, and plates. This treatment method prevents deformity of the bones and promotes quick healing.

If I have a bone-related injury, should I use heat or ice to relieve the pain?

The general rule of thumb is to use ice within the first 24 - 48 hours of injury or whenever the swelling is seen. You must apply ice indirectly to the affected area. Apply the ice for 20 minutes and remove it for another 20 minutes. Repeat if necessary. Ice will help to curb the swelling and inflammation by reducing the blood flow to the injured area.
